On Tuesday, Jennifer McDonald, the former Front Royal-Warren County Economic Development executive director, learned that she will be serving more time in jail as she awaits her trial on fraud and embezzlement charges.

McDonald was arrested Friday after being indicted by a special grand jury. On Tuesday, Judge Clifford Athey Jr. agreed with prosecutors that she could be a flight risk.

The decision came as a bit of a surprise for someone who once was a leader in the community, but we feel that Athey made the right decision in keeping her confined – anyone who may have access to some of the millions of dollars of allegedly embezzled public funds might be tempted to flee anywhere in the world to avoid spending time in prison.

We’re expecting more indictments to be handed up by the special grand jury as its members listen to witnesses and sift through evidence in what could turn out to be the biggest public corruption case this region has ever seen.
