Central improved to 3-2 as the Falcons held on for a 14-12 non-district football road victory over Staunton on Friday night.
The Falcons trailed 6-0 after the first quarter. The Storm used 13 plays and almost six minutes of game time to take the lead. Staunton quarterback William Dod threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Rik’Avian Carey with 6:21 left in the first quarter.
The Falcons took the lead for good in the second quarter. Central senior quarterback Kelan Hoover connected with junior wide receiverKamren Wells to take a 7-6 lead with 7:58 left in the first half.
Central (3-2) extended the lead to 14-6 with 1:16 left in the first half on a 1-yard run by sophomore running back Isaiah Dyer.
Staunton (2-2) responded with the final score of the game. Dod capped off an eight-play drive with a 22-yard touchdown pass to Naquanne Johnson on the final play of the first half to cut the lead to 14-12.
Central’s defense shut down Staunton in the second half, holding them scoreless. The Falcons were able to get a key turnover in the final minutes of the game on a Brevin Scott interception to halt a Staunton drive and seal the win.
Central has a bye week and will play again on Oct. 11 when it hosts Skyline to start the Class 3 Northwestern District season.
