FRONT ROYAL – Police have arrested two people suspected in the theft last month of a car from a 7-Eleven parking lot.

Dakota Free, 32, who lives in the Richmond area, and Derrick Malone, 35, of Front Royal, are accused of stealing a 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer that was left running in the store parking lot on Sept. 18.

According to a news release from police, the owner of the vehicle said he left the car running while he went into the store. Customers told police they saw two people, a man and a woman, get into the car and drive off.

Police double-checked witness statements with video footage from the store, according to the release.

On Sunday, police received a tip that the car might be parked at the Hampton Inn in Front Royal. According to the release, police confirmed the car, which was parked behind the hotel, was the same vehicle that had been stolen.

Police arrested Free and Malone without incident, according to the release. They are being held at Rappahannock-Shenandoah-Warren County Regional Jail without bond.

Free was in Front Royal with her boyfriend visiting family, according to court documents. She told police she was supposed to appear in Henrico County on Sept. 10 on petit larceny charges but she did not go because she was not picked up by law enforcement officers, according to court documents.

Malone was on parole when he was arrested on Sunday, according to court documents. He has a long criminal record, according to documents, including “numerous” felony convictions.

Police charged Free and Malone with grand larceny: stealing a motor vehicle valued at more than or equal to $500.

As of Monday, court documents show both Free and Malone will appear in Warren County General District Court at 10 a.m. Oct. 29.
