FRONT ROYAL – A judge on Tuesday found a nursing home resident accused of sexually assaulting another resident in November incompetent to stand trial.
In November, police arrested Michael Coffman, 62, after a housekeeper at Royal Haven Nursing Home told them they saw him assault another resident.
Court documents showed that at his initial hearing Coffman refused to cooperate with the magistrate and would not answer any questions. Since then the court has ordered that Coffman be evaluated to determine whether he is competent to stand trial.
In December Coffman’s attorney submitted a letter to the court requesting his appearance be continued until a finding of competency could be determined.
On Tuesday, Judge W. Dale Houff said Coffman was not determined to be competent and continued the next hearing out at least 30 days.
