Samuels Public Library in Front Royal will celebrate all things pop culture during its annual Samicon from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
The event will feature activities, cosplaying, and vendors. Kitti McKean, the adult reference supervisor at Samuels Public Library, said this year’s theme is “The Lord of the Rings.”
“The library staff have set up an escape room and will oversee Bilbo Baggins’ birthday party, a costume contest, geek crafts, and ‘Lord of the Rings’ themed scavenger hunts for both adults and children,” she said.
The “Lord of the Rings” themed escape room will start at 10 a.m. and run until 2 p.m., while the costume contest will begin at 1 p.m. The Bilbo Baggins birthday party activity will be held from 2-4 p.m. A Digitial Bookmobile will also be on hand for attendees to sample its digital catalog of electronic books, audiobooks, magazines and streaming video.
Other activities include a scavenger hunt and a “maker space” — which will allow attendees to do activities like making art or playing around with technology. A performance by the Northern Virginia Academy of Ballet will take place at 10:30 a.m.
The event will feature cosplayers from various popular film and comic franchises, including “Star Wars,” “Batman,” and “Ghostbusters.”
McKean said that 3,000 people attended Samicon last year.
“I heard so many say they meant to come just for a short time but ended up staying for the whole day because there was so much to do,” she said. “Believe me, this year there’s even more.”
Food vendors, including C&C Frozen Treats and Mama Lucie’s Kitchen, will be on hand, while the Front Royal Brewing Company will be serving nonalcoholic drinks.
