FRONT ROYAL – An exploding firework resulted in a 57-year-old man suffering “a significant traumatic injury to his hand,” according to a Warren County Fire and Rescue news release.
The release states EMS crews arrived at the 300 block of Briar Lane on Saturday night and the injured man was treated on the scene and then transported to Reston Hospital Center by helicopter.
The fireworks used were illegal as Fire Marshal Gerry Maiatico states in the release that it is a misdemeanor “to possess, ignite or discharge any firework that travels into the air or explodes.”
As a result of an investigation, in which the Warren County Sheriff’s Office assisted, the release states that 91 illegal fireworks were confiscated.
“This unfortunate incident should serve as a reminder that fireworks can be dangerous, causing serious burns and injuries. You can help prevent fireworks-related injuries and deaths by safely utilizing lawful fireworks,” the release states.
Fire Chief Richard Mabie states in the release that watching fireworks at a community event is “the safest way” to enjoy them.
