Virginia State Police reported a man from Spotsylvania died Sunday morning when he drove off the road, hit a guard rail and ran into a tree.

Steven Johnson was driving east on Interstate 66 in his 2017 Chevy Silverado when he lost control and went off the road near mile-marker 14, according to a release from state police.

Sgt. Brent Coffey, public information officer for the state police, said state police were told about the accident by a county deputy who arrived at the scene after the crash happened.

Coffey said there were no witnesses to the accident that have come forward.

According to the release, Johnson died at the scene as a result of his injuries. There were no other injuries or other passengers in the car, according to the release.

Coffey said the cause of the accident is under investigation. He said there may have been a medical emergency that caused Johnson to drive off the road but it is under investigation and more information will be available after the medical examiner finishes an autopsy.
