FRONT ROYAL – A mother and son have been arrested and charged with a litany of offenses ranging from abduction to assault.
Maria Crouch, 68, of Front Royal, allegedly assisted her son, Richard Crouch, 36, also of Front Royal, of abducting his girlfriend before he repeatedly choked and hit her, according to court documents.
On Sept. 24, Richard Crouch told his girlfriend to get into the car with him and his mom so they could go get something to eat, court documents show. After Richard Crouch told his mom to drive to her house, Richard Crouch’s girlfriend asked them to let her out of the car. Richard Crouch’s girlfriend told police she believed the child locks were on in the car and she could not get out after they told her she couldn’t leave.
According to court documents, Richard Crouch took his girlfriend back to Front Royal later in the day. The two went to the Comfort Inn where Richard Crouch repeatedly choked and hit his girlfriend, according to court documents.
On Wednesday, the victim went to the Phoenix Project, a crisis intervention and support center, and told them about her boyfriend, documents show. A Phoenix Project employee called the police and told them that the woman claimed Richard Crouch assaulted her.
Court documents show the employee told police the woman claimed Richard Crouch had hit her, slapped her, punched her and banged her head on the ground before choking her until she lost consciousness. The woman claimed he choked her at least three times.
Police arrested Maria Crouch on Thursday and charged her with felony abduction by force.
Richard Crouch remained at large but wanted until he was spotted on Sunday on Strasburg Road, according to a news release from the Warren County Sheriff’s Office.
After police were notified Richard Crouch had been spotted, Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived in the area and learned he had fled into the woods. Deputies set up a perimeter and used K-9s to find him. He was arrested without incident, according to the news release.
The Sheriff’s Office charged Richard Crouch with eight counts of strangling another causing wounding or injury, two counts of assault on a family member, one count of malicious bodily injury, one count of abduction and one count of possession of a schedule I or II drugs with the intent to manufacture, sell or distribute.
Both Maria Crouch and Richard Crouch are being held without bail at the Rappahannock-Shenandoah-Warren Regional Jail.
Initial court documents show that Maria Crouch is scheduled to appear in Warren County General District Court at 10 a.m. Nov. 12.
Richard Crouch is scheduled to appear in Warren County General District Court on Oct. 1 and in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on Oct. 24.
