The Mount Jackson Town Council and Finance Committee members meet tonight to discuss next fiscal year’s proposed budget and hear from residents.

Before the town’s regularly scheduled council meeting, the finance committee will meet to sit down and go over the budget, which was presented at last month’s meeting.

Kevin Fauber, the town manager, said the committee wanted one more chance to see if there are any questions from the committee or council members before opening up the floor to town residents during the public hearing.

Council members won’t vote on the proposed budget until their meeting in June, Fauber said. They will have one month to review and make changes to the budget.

The town is projecting a modest increase in revenues and spending for the fiscal year 2019-2020, totaling $2,261,200, roughly 1.4 percent more than the current budget.

The proposed budget has small increases for water and sewer rates but local taxes aren’t moving at all.

Council members can make changes to the budget after the public hearing but cannot raise taxes or rates without another hearing before they pass a budget.

Tonight’s meeting will also include short presentations from French Brothers LLC and Bowman Andros concerning their respective rezoning and permit requests. Both companies appeared before the Planning Commission last week and Fauber said he expects the presentations to be the same.

French Brothers LLC is requesting a zoning change in order to accommodate some construction for a Hardee’s coming to town.

Bowman Andros is making preparations for a plant expansion. One section of the firm’s current plant has already been closed, with the employees being shuttled to other departments while Bowman Andros assesses how many employees will be needed once the expansion is up and running in 2021.

“I don’t think there will be anything substantially new,” Fauber said about the presentations Tuesday night. “I would say between now and the public hearing … we should be getting more detailed plans on the new Hardee’s.”

The Finance Committee meets at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall and the Town Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the same location.
