NEW MARKET – Town Council members approved a new optional insurance plan for town employees at Monday’s meeting.

Town Manager Todd Walters told council members about a voluntary long-term care insurance program available for town employees. Genworth Life Insurance is underwriting the program, Walters said.

Walters said the program is voluntary and will not cost the town anything. Any employee who signs up will pay for their own coverage.

“It’s something else I feel like we can offer our employees,” Walters said. “I think it’s good these days. I know a lot of people that have had these long-term care insurance programs, and it’s really come in handy for them as they get older.”

Councilman Larry Bompiani supported the idea and asked Walters if council members would qualify for the plan.

Walters said he didn’t believe they would, as council members are not town employees, though they are eligible for health insurance plans through the town.

Walters said he didn’t know if any employees were interested in the plan, as he hadn’t shared anything until he knew council members were comfortable with providing the option.
