A Dodge diesel pickup truck caught fire on northbound Interstate 81 at around 6:15 a.m. Monday. Trooper Hoc Jones with the Virginia State Police said there were no injuries.

“It was not a crash,” Jones said, “it was just a vehicle caught on fire.”

Jones said the cause of the fire was unknown, but he said he believed there was an issue in the engine compartment.

The driver of the pickup pulled onto the shoulder of I-81 near the 294 exit, just south of Strasburg, Jones said. The interstate was shut down to allow fire engines and Virginia Department of Transportation vehicles go to the scene.

Jones said state police along with the Strasburg Fire Department put out the fire and VDOT officials salted the road to prevent the water from freezing. Lanes were shut down for less than an hour, Jones said.
