Bekah Ansbro (Central ’16) was named the Atlantic 10 Softball Pitcher of the Week on Monday for the second time this season.

The George Mason junior pitcher threw 11 innings last week, allowing just three hits. Ansbro struck out nine and walked three and allowed no runs.

On April 13 against Saint Joseph’s University, she pitched a complete-game shutout in a 3-0 Patriots’ victory. Ansbro allowed just one hit and struck out three. The game was the first of a doubleheader.

Ansbro also pitched three innings on April 11 in a 6-0 victory over Coppin State University. She struck out five and walked one. Ansbro also came on in relief in a 4-0 loss to Saint Joseph’s on April 14 and pitched 1.1 innings, striking out one and allowing one hit.

On April 6, Ansbro went 5.2 innings in a 3-2 loss to the University of Rhode Island. She struck out 11 and walked two.

For the season, Ansbro has a team-best 2.48 Earned Run Average. She has pitched in 23 games, including 12 starts. She has six complete games and has struck out 86 in 93.1 innings. Ansbro has an 8-8 record with a save.

The Patriots are 17-22, including 5-9 in the Atlantic 10.

SENIOR SUCCESS: Ryan Smoot (Strasburg ’15) is having a solid baseball season at Virginia Military Institute.

Smoot leads the regular starters with a .438 on-base percentage this year. While the senior catcher is batting .174 (15-for-86), he leads the team with 23 walks and 18 hit by pitches. His 18 hit by pitches is tied for second in all of Division 1 baseball.

Smoot has been hitting well over the last seven games. He is batting .333 (7-for-21) in his last seven games.

On Tuesday, Smoot went 1-for-3 with two walks, two RBIs and two runs scored in an 11-10, 11-inning victory over the University of Richmond.

On April 13, Smoot went 2-for-3 with a double and one run scored and one RBI in a 5-4 win over Wofford College.

On April 5, he went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and two runs scored in a 7-6 win over East Tennessee State University.

For the season, Smoot has seven RBIs and 19 runs scored. VMI is 10-27, including 5-7 in the Southern Conference.
