Recently returned from photographing wildlife in the Falkland Islands and the Canadian Arctic, Front Royal resident Sharon Fisher hopes to share her love of birds and photography with others.
Every day she's outside taking photos around the valley, she said.
Fisher will be teaching the free program "For the Love of Birds: Observing, Identifying, and Photographing Winter Birds" from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Samuels Public Library, 330 E. Criser Road, Front Royal.
"It’s gonna be a combination of not just photography, but [how] really good photography comes from understanding bird behavior," she said.
The program will focus on “why we love birds — building on a Valentine’s Day theme.”
She will talk about birds common to the Northern Shenandoah Valley, particularly those found in the winter, and offer tips on how to photograph them.
“My goal is to really make photography something that can be done by everyone," she said. “You can actually do some bird photography with smartphones now."
Though Fisher has traveled the world to find interesting photo opportunities, she said there’s much to be found around Virginia, too.
“You don’t have to go to the Arctic to get beautiful photos,” she said.
On March 14, she’s planning a program at Cool Spring Battlefield in Clarke County to talk about great blue herons that have built about 30 nests in a rookery there.
Part bird walk, part photography session, it will present a chance for participants to get a feel for the camera, she said. Meet in the parking lot at 9 a.m. at 1400 Parker Lane, Bluemont. Extra camera equipment will be available.
Fisher, who taught photography at Shenandoah’s Center for Lifelong Learning, has also offered programs on wildflowers and winter photography.
“She’s an outstanding teacher,” said Kitti McKean, adult reference supervisor at Samuels. “She can make things that are difficult concepts so clear and so easy.”
