Police arrested a Strasburg man on Tuesday night after he allegedly forced his pregnant girlfriend to stay inside their home.

Strasburg residents who have opted into text message alerts saw their phones light up Tuesday evening around 9:30, alerting them of a heavy police presence on East North Street. Police responded to a report that Austin Jeffries, 21, was intoxicated and wielding a knife, according to a report from Strasburg police.

Police report that Jeffries had been yelling at someone in front of his home in Strasburg before going inside with his girlfriend.

After police arrived at the home, they attempted to contact Jeffries, who told them he was in Warren County, according to the report. Police, who were outside Jeffries’ home, later saw Jeffries and his girlfriend leave out the back of the house.

Following the incident, police report they discovered that Jeffries was forcing his girlfriend to stay inside, leading to police charging him with one count of felony abduction. Police also issued an emergency protective order as a result of the altercation on Tuesday.

Jeffries is being held at Rappahannock-Shenandoah-Warren County Regional Jail. He will appear in Shenandoah County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on Oct. 22.
