Stonewall Jackson’s boys soccer team broke open a close game with four goals in the final 14 minutes on Monday night in its season opener.
The Generals pulled away for an 8-3 Bull Run District victory over Page County.
Stonewall Jackson’s Andrew Lute had five goals to lead the way. Braxton Biller, Brahim Dehache and Lucca Despirito had a goal each.
Lute gave the Generals a 1-0 lead with a goal in the first two minutes. The Panthers tied the game at 1 just one minute later. Biller scored on a penalty kick with 12 minutes left in the first half for a 2-1 Stonewall Jackson lead.
Dehache extended the lead to 3-1 with 33 minutes left in the game on a direct kick. Lute scored the first of his four second-half goal with 29 minutes left for a 4-1 edge. However, the Panthers scored twice on penalty kicks over the next 13 minutes to cut the lead to 4-3.
Lute answered with three straight goals with 14, seven and three minutes left. Despirito added a goal in the final two minutes.
The Generals (1-0, 1-0 Bull Run) host Clarke County on Friday.
William Monroe 12, Central 2, 6 innings
A six-run fifth inning hurt the Falcons in a Class 3 Northwestern District road loss to the Dragons. The game was called after six innings due to the mercy rule.
William Monroe led 4-1 before the six-run inning pushed the lead to 10-1.
Central was led at the plate by Tyler Rice with two hits. Jacob Walters had the only other Central hit and an RBI. Caleb Daugherty and Calvin Bernard each scored a run for the Falcons.
Central (0-2, 0-2 Class 3 Northwestern) hosts Brentsville on Friday.
