The New Market Shockers started their Rockingham County Baseball league season off with a 5-3 victory over Elkton on Saturday night at Rebel Park in New Market.

Sherando and Shenandoah University graduate Darrell Thompson went six innings and had 10 strikeouts on the mound. Michael Prosperi (Shenandoah University) picked up the win with one inning pitched and two strikeouts. C.J. Morton (Shenandoah University) picked up the save for the Shockers and had two strikeouts in one inning of work. The Shockers used four pitchers, who combined for 16 strikeouts.

Sherando graduate Frankie Ritter (Shenandoah University) went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, two stolen bases and a run scored. Matt Moon (Shenandoah University) was 2-for-2 with an RBI and 2018 Central graduate Luke Estep (Roanoke College) scored two runs and had a stolen base for the Shockers.

Trailing 3-2 in the seventh, the Shockers scored three runs to take the lead for good. The Shockers had only four hits in the victory but took advantage of three Elkton errors and drew five walks.

New Market hosts Clover Hill at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
