A Strasburg man is facing driving under the influence charges after colliding with an Augusta County Sheriff's Office vehicle during a pursuit on Wednesday.
Rico Valentio Womack, 33, of Strasburg, was charged with driving under the influence for a second offense within 10 years, felony eluding, and felony driving on a revoked license with DUI-related prior offenses. He is also facing citations for expired inspection, altered tags and no insurance.
According to a news release from the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy traveling southbound on Interstate 81 in August County at around 6:50 p.m. Wednesday observed a vehicle approach the side of his patrol vehicle. The vehicle, which had its emergency flashers on and was traveling at speeds of 90 to 95 mph, moved in front of the deputy's vehicle, narrowly missing the front bumper, the release states.
The deputy followed the vehicle and noticed it swerving and passing cars in both lanes, the release continues. The deputy activated his emergency equipment to try to stop the vehicle. The pursuit ended after about 15 minutes when the driver lost control of his vehicle after swerving toward the deputy’s vehicle and colliding with it, the release states.
Womack was arrested without further incident and no injuries were reported, the release states. He is being held without bond in Middle River Regional Jail in Staunton, according to the jail's website on Thursday.
