Strasburg resident Andrew Keller announced he is running for the Shenandoah County School Board.

Keller, who has been retired for a couple of years, worked in education for more than 30 years. Education is what he knows, he said.

“I saw an opportunity. I want to be able to serve our community and help the School Board in whatever way I can,” Keller said.

The opportunity for the District 6 seat opened after board member Sonya Williams-Giersch announced she is not running for another term.

Keller said he hopes to be an advocate for students.

“I want to be part of a group in an atmosphere that makes sure students are able to learn at a high level and that teachers can teach, which is their mission,” Keller said.

He said he believes that experience will help support the goals of the division as well as offer insight and direction for the future.

Keller taught alternative education and then social studies. He coached the freshman and junior varsity basketball team at Warren County High School. Keller was the principal of Warren County Junior High School and Skyline High School.

He is an adjunct faculty member at Shenandoah University and a board member of Lord Fairfax Community College.

Keller has served on the Shenandoah County Free Clinic Board. He is the vice president of AGK Rental Properties in Strasburg.
