STEPHENS CITY – A strong start, but another straight-set loss to a more experienced team. Sherando fell to Millbrook 25-21, 25-17, 25-10 on Thursday in Class 4 Northwestern District volleyball action.

Warriors coach James Minney said the Pioneers were just more experienced at the net than his young team.

“Take away the third set and I’m pretty happy with the first two,” Minney said after the match.

Minney said his team’s energy was good in the first two sets, and that was reflected in the closer score. Right now, with seven sophomores and just six upperclassmen, he’s working to teach his players to stay focused and consistent for three sets. Minney said that’s just something that comes with experience.

The Warriors were closest to winning the first set, which at one point was tied 19-19. Millbrook scored 5 of the last 6 points to pick up the victory. Jordan Weir led the Pioneers with 13 kills and 10 blocks. After the match, Millbrook coach Carla Milton said those blocks really helped her team pick up the straight-set victory.

“They’re getting their hands on a lot,” Milton said of her team.

It was something Millbrook worked on in practice the day before the game, and the results showed. Weir was helped by teammates Skylar and Victoria Johnson. The sisters each posted 10 kills. Madison Koeller added 6 more kills and 3 blocks.

Sherando struggled to keep pace with the bigger, more experienced Pioneers. Warriors’ sophomore Saige Garver led her team with 8 kills. Junior Madelyn See and senior Reagan Newhouse also posted 5 kills each. After the match, Minney said he was impressed with how creative Millbrook was able to be at the net. He added that’s something he’s still working on with his young team, so it’s tough for them to prepare for.

“We can’t practice that way because we can’t play that way,” Minney explained.

He was pleased with his team’s effort and energy for the first two sets, calling it a “big step” for his young team. Sherando will try to take another step forward on Friday when they take on Handley at home.
