Last week, the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation into an alleged sexual assault on a school bus filled with Strasburg High School boys basketball team players and coaches.
Police were alerted almost a month after the incident, and once an investigation began, the junior and varsity boys basketball team games were suspended indefinitely.
Police and school officials are not discussing details of the case while the investigation is underway. We don’t know officially if students were suspended, or if school employees have been put on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
We have seen and heard comments and questions flowing through the community and social media channels: what in the world happened? Why did it take almost a month to report it? Who reported it? Did any school employees know about it? Was it a sexual assault or horseplay that has been blown out of proportion?
What we do know is that this allegation is being taken seriously by police and school officials, as it should. Anytime there is a hint of physical abuse, misconduct, hazing or bullying of any kind, it needs to be reported immediately, investigated, dealt with appropriately and then discussed with students, faculty and the community to ensure that everyone is aware of what constitutes inappropriate behavior and that it will not be tolerated.
Whatever the outcome of the investigation, we expect this situation will provide a difficult lesson learned the hard way for some.
