A Strasburg hero was laid to rest Thursday following a firefighter’s funeral procession through this small Virginia town.

Former Fire Chief Bill Walton helped save many Strasburg homes, businesses and lives for many decades during his tenure as a volunteer with the department.

He was honored during a Town Council meeting last month in a speech by former Strasburg Fire Chief Jeff Wharton, who called Walton a “huge mentor to us, he’s a father figure, he’s a grandfather figure.”

Walton loved his town, telling those at that meeting that Strasburg “is a wonderful place to live. It’s a place of opportunity. And I don’t care what anybody says. But it’s on your own, and you’ve got to work for it.”

He did work for the town, and he certainly will be missed.
