As the winter high school sports season approaches the holiday break coming up in two weeks, a pair of rivalry doubleheaders on the basketball court tops this week’s athletic events.

Kicking off the rivalry theme will be Central and Stonewall Jackson’s boys and girls basketball programs, which will meet in Woodstock on Wednesday night. The girls will open the action at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:45 p.m.

Later in the week, cross-town rivals Skyline and Warren County will square off in their own basketball doubleheader on the Wildcats’ Hall of Fame Night on Friday. Skyline’s girls (4-1), who picked up a 34-32 win over Clarke County last Friday night, have now won four straight and will have a chance to build on that streak with a home game against Brentsville tonight before making the trip across Front Royal to take on Warren County.

The Hawks’ boys, meanwhile, are still seeking their first win of the season and will travel to Brentsville tonight and host Loudoun County on Wednesday before taking on the Wildcats, losers of three straight, at the end of the week.

“The biggest thing is we’ve just gotta improve our mentality, the mental part of the game,” Skyline coach Jeff Monroe said after a loss to Riverside last week. “We can’t come out and expect just to walk on the floor ready to play. We’ve gotta get ourselves prepared for the game and everything.”

Prior to traveling to Central this week, Stonewall Jackson (2-1) will have a chance to exceed last season’s win total already in 2016 when the Generals host Rappahannock County at 7:15 tonight. Stonewall, which has won back-to-back games (both against Strasburg), fell to Rappahannock County 58-48 on the road in their season opener. The Generals also host Page County on Friday to kick off Shenandoah District action.

Tuesday will feature one local home game, as Warren County will host William Monroe in Conference 28 play while Sherando hosts Martinsburg (West Virginia) on Wednesday before traveling to Jefferson County (West Virginia) for a tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Central and Strasburg will each have three chances to pick up their first win of the season this week. In addition to Wednesday’s matchup with Stonewall, Central hosts George Mason (Thursday) and travels to Luray (Saturday), while Strasburg travels to Page County (Tuesday) and Rappahannock County (Thursday) before returning home to host Moorefield (West Virginia) on Saturday.

Girls basketball

Stonewall Jackson (3-1), which suffered its first loss at the hands of Strasburg last Thursday, bookends its matchup with Central with road games at Rappahannock County (tonight) and Page County (Friday).

Strasburg will host Page County Tuesday and Rappahannock County on Friday, while Warren County will travel to William Monroe ahead of Friday night’s rivalry contest. The Wildcats (2-2) have had a seesaw start to their season, pairing a couple of wins against Manassas Park with two losses to Brentsville.

Sherando (4-0) will host Martinsburg on Wednesday in the first game of the Warriors’ hoops doubleheader with the Bulldogs. Central will travel to George Mason on Thursday.

All local public school wrestling teams will be on the road this weekend, and only two will be heading to the same destination. Strasburg and Warren County will travel to Turner Ashby for a tournament on Saturday, a week after claiming championship trophies at the Hornet Duals (at Wilson Memorial) and the Andrew Kenney Memorial Duals (at Sherando), respectively.

Also on Saturday, Central will compete in a tournament at W.T. Woodson, Skyline will travel to Cave Spring for the Knights of the Round Table tournament and Stonewall Jackson will compete in the Mountaineer Duals hosted by Madison County. Sherando will participate in a two-day event at Mussleman (West Virginia) on Friday and Saturday.

Saturday will also feature a full schedule of local swimming. Central and Strasburg will travel to a meet at Woodberry Forest, Stonewall will compete in an event hosted by Jefferson County (West Virginia) at Shepherd University and Sherando will take on its Northwestern District rivals at Jim Barnett Park in Winchester.

Postgraduate boys basketball

Massanutten Military Academy will host Combine Academy on Wednesday before taking on Mount Zion Academy (Maryland) in a tournament this weekend. The Colonels will then be off until Jan. 6.
