The New Market Rebels and the Strasburg Express each landed five players on the 2017 Valley Baseball League All-Star Game North Division roster, according to an announcement released Monday afternoon by the league. The Front Royal Cardinals and Woodstock River Bandits will each have four players representing the North at the annual all-star game, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. next Sunday at James Madison University’s Veterans Memorial Park.

The four local Valley League teams combined to net 18 of the North Division’s 25 all-star selections, which also include four players from Purcellville and three from Winchester. Purcellville’s Brett Fuller will manage the North squad.

The South Division, coached by Charlottesville’s Corey Hunt, features 25 players from Charlottesville, Covington, Harrisonburg, Staunton and Waynesboro.

All-star game managers were pulled from the division leaders through this past Sunday’s games.

New Market will be well-represented in the infield next weekend with catcher Jake Washer, first baseman Alec Aleywine, second baseman Chase Suddeth and third baseman Nick Barber joining right-hander Nate Pawelczyk as all-star selections.

Strasburg right-handed pitchers Lawson Humphries and Zach Peek, catcher Jake Perry, shortstop Simon Landry and outfielder Brandon Quaranta will represent the Express.

Front Royal’s four all-star selections include left-handed pitchers Joshua Andrews and Ryan Ruggles and outfielders Dominic Canzone and Luc Lipcius, and Woodstock right-hander Nick Fuchs, second baseman Derrick Herd, shortstop Cash Gladfelter and outfielder Danton Hyman will be the Bandits’ representatives.

Hyman is the lone returning VBL all-star selection from last season, according to the release.

Prior to the game’s first pitch, batting practice and autograph/photo sessions for young fans will take place from 3:10 p.m.-4:45 p.m., followed by the 60-yard dash contest at 4:50 p.m. and the Home Run Derby at 5:20 p.m.

Contestants for the Home Run Derby have yet to be announced.

The second class of the Valley Baseball League Hall of Fame also will be introduced prior to the game at 7 p.m. The 2017 inductees are Wayne Comer, John Kruk, Claude “C.C.” Michael, Sam Perlozzo, Earl Shirkey, Marion “Bo” Trumbo and Maynard “Mo” Weber.
