We welcome letters and opinion essays (commentary) that are well written, thoughtful and thought-provoking on a variety of topics.
Letters must be 350 or fewer words and must not include Web addresses, phone numbers or addresses, or material pulled from another source without attribution. Letters must not include personal attacks, hate language or potentially libelous statements or allegations.
We do not accept letters of endorsement for businesses or candidates, or letters that include solicitations of donations. We only accept letters from readers in our circulation area, or those letters that bring up issues specific to our area.
Letters may address or be a rebuttal to a letter to the editor or news story, but only one rebuttal letter will be accepted per letter writer.
Commentaries must be 750 words or shorter, and must be well written, with facts checked and sources of material noted. We require the author’s name, address and phone number as well as a sentence about the author for a brief bio at the end of the submission. The author must disclose any personal, financial or professional interest he or she has in the topic of the commentary. A color photo of the author is welcome. An email address that readers can respond to is encouraged.
Submissions may discuss a candidate’s issues and performance, but must not be a direct endorsement. We will only accept one letter in a 30-day time period per writer about a specific candidate. We will stop accepting submissions about election issues or candidates by 5 p.m. on the Tuesday before election day.
We verify all submissions by telephone so a telephone number must be included for verification. If no number is provided, your letter will be not be accepted.
There is no guarantee that submissions will be accepted.
All letters and commentaries will be edited.
